Custody questions rarely have one US-wide answer. State law differs, and county rules differ inside a single state. Start with the order or parenting plan that actually applies to you.

Record each event with the date it happened and the date you wrote it down. Keep the whole message thread, bill or calendar item rather than a crop of it. A screenshot should never be your only copy.

What a notes app does perfectly well

Speed and familiarity. A note is two taps away, free, already synced. For a parent documenting the occasional late pickup in an otherwise cooperative arrangement, a dated note plus a screenshot in the camera roll is genuinely fine. The four failure points

• No arithmetic. "What is she owed for school costs since January, and what was reimbursed?" is a question a note cannot answer and an expense tracker answers in one tap.
• The export problem. An expert reviewing your situation wants a dated, clear document. Not a shared iCloud note and 60 files. Reformatting a year of freeform notes into something reviewable is real work at exactly the moment you have the least capacity for it.

What structure actually buys you

A dedicated custody journal app is essentially the notes workflow with the failure points removed. Every entry prompted into the same fields (date, time, type, child, facts, files), evidence stored on the event it belongs to, expenses tracked with repayment status, and one-tap PDF exports filtered by date, child, or type.
