Comparequestions parents ask
Do I need a lawyer to use these?
No. Many Canadian parents go through family court on their own, and provinces run family justice services to help. Clear, dated notes let you set out what happened yourself, with or without counsel.
What does a parenting assessor look at?
Assessors and the Office of the Children's Lawyer, where it's involved, look at routines, each parent's role and the child's needs. They move fast, so keep each note brief, dated and tied to its source.
Do I have to take a parenting course first?
In several provinces, yes. Ontario's Mandatory Information Program and Alberta's Parenting After Separation course are common first steps. Your province's family court website lists what applies.
Do the words custody and access still apply?
Under the federal Divorce Act, orders now say parenting time and decision-making responsibility. Some provincial laws still use older terms. Copy the words in your own order so your notes line up with it.
